Pushed the Sunchaser at 70-80 mph for 230 miles from Long Beach to Fresno, and once I hit Valencia it was 90-100 degrees the whole way home. The car performed beautifully, with its temp needle only going up a bit on the uphill side of the Grapevine, but nowhere near overheating.

I was proud of my car, which not only looks as good as any car at Toyotafest, but likely runs better than most. I live in the San Joaquin Valley, which is very hot in the summer, and I’ll be damned if a little heat is going to stop me from driving my car. However, at 102, I need to cool off.

This is why I have a pool, which I am standing in as I write this post. Speaking of summer heat, the Sunchaser has a black vinyl interior, which is an instant 3rd degree burn in the summer sun. I am thinking of having it reupholstered in fabric in a lighter color. Old school yellow plaid with black accents is what I have in mind at the moment.

Like this, but black fabric instead of vinyl. This is a Mazda, but you get the idea. What do you think?

My other question is about wheels. I tracked down a dealer for honest-to-god for-reals minilites, which are apparently still made and sold. The stock wheels are 14×5.5. My current wheels are 15x7 and are rubbing - way worse now with a little taller tire. The minilites come in 14×6. I think I am going to buy them. What do you think?

Interior plan sound good looking, of course if you like what you have you can always go the sheep skin cover route for the summer.

I would be cautious about color matching the exterior to the yellow plaid cloth- the colors are so close that it could look awesome or a little off. But love the idea as long as you’re not hung up on purity.

And yeah the mini lites sound fantastic!

I support any idea that leads to more vehicles having a plaid interior. Might I suggest a loud Macleod tartan plaid. Then you can wear a kilt that matches your cars interior.

Apologies in advance for the massive number of double picture posts. That always happens when posting from my computer.

The only issue would be whether you would feel compelled to try to find something that exactly matches the exterior. If so maybe something in a grey plaid

Another option for sheepskin seat covers us to have them custom made for the car. Back in the day, we had upholstery shop take a set of high-quality, but off the shelf, sheepskin covers and then rework them to custom fit the car. It wasn’t particularly expensive, and they were much nicer when they fit the seat like they came on it from the factory.

Overall, the yellow plaid and black cloth sounds like an awesome, and long-term, solution. I personally would be tempted by slightly more subtle like a light grey plaid and black color combination.

Where are your current tires rubbing, because offset matters too when sizing wheels? The nice thing about 15x7 is there are a bunch of options for tires across varying performance classes. In a 14" wheel, tire choices are a getting a lot more limited these days. You might make sure you’re satisfied with available tire options before ordering, and hang onto those 15x7s as a second set of wheels in case you ever get interested in something like autocross.

I love the idea of the yellow plaid, but I’d maybe move up a few tones to a slightly more dark gray color instead of black to help reduce the effect of heat.

As a weather nerd, I’m fascinated by anywhere that sees 30-degree swings in a normal day. 15-20 is the norm in humidityland
